The Space Shuttle Atlantis was the fourth orbiter at Kennedy Space Center. The Space Shuttle Atlantis got its name from the primary research vessel for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts from 1930-1966. The Space Shuttle Atlantis has accepted on the guts of the sailing vessel with numerous significant voyages of its own, together with the Galileo planetary explorer mission in 1989 and the deployment of the Arthur Holley Compton Gamma Ray Observatory in 1991.
The Space Shuttle Atlantis was commonly referred to as OV-104 or Orbiter Vehicle 104. Having an empty weight of 151,315 pounds at roll out and 171 pounds with the main engines in it, the Space Shuttle Atlantis was shipped to California to go through improvement and alteration. The modifications include a drag chute, new plumbing lines, more than 800 new heat protections and blankets, new insulations for the main landing gear doors and structural modifications on the airframe. There were 165 modifications done to Space Shuttle Atlantis for its 20 months stay in Palmdale, California.
