In August 23, 1954, the YC-130 prototype made its first flight from the Lockheed plant in California. Its serial number was 53-3397 and it was the second prototype but the first to fly. Stanley Beltz and Roy Wimmer were the pilots of the prototype and Jack Real and Dick Stanton were the flight engineers.
When the two prototypes were finished, the production was moved to Georgia where there are 2,000 C-130 aircrafts built. The C-130A was the initial production model. It is equipped with Allison T56 turboprops with three blade propellers. In December 1956, deliveries started until the manufacturing of the C-130B model. Some C-130A variants were re-designated as C-130D after having skis and rockets for the Jet Assisted Take Off. The C-130B had ailerons, upgraded engines and four bladed propellers that were normal till the end of 1990. The C-130B model has the standing of being the sports car model.
The C-130 Hercules Gunship has the record for being the heaviest and biggest aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. Internationally, the C-130 is the primary strategic airlifter for militaries. More than 50 nations were served by the Hercules. In December 2006, the Hercules was the third aircraft to mark 50 years of nonstop use in history with the United States Army Air Force. Throughout the more than 50 years of service, it has contributed in operations like humanitarian, civilian and of course the military.
