History:

The OS2U Kingfisher was the most easily recognized plane of its day. The dominant feature of this observation plane was the combination of the large centerline and smaller underwing floats.

The OS2U Kingfisher was designed for catapult operation from battleship and cruisers for the US Navy. The Kingfisher served as observer aircraft, anti submarine aircraft and rescue aircraft. One of the most famous battles that involved OS2U Kingfisher was the rescue of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker. On July 20, 1938, the OS2U Kingfisher, powered by Pratt and Whitney, flew for the first time. On its first flight, the OS2U Kingfisher attained a maximum speed of 177 mph with a gross weight of 4,611 lbs.

Compared to other aircrafts, the OS2U differed primarily in service equipment and in the engine. Its engine is the R-985-50. The first production model was released in 1941 which was the OS2U-3. The OS2U-3 was externally similar to its predecessors but it is powered by R-985-AN-2- or the 8 Wasp Junior.

The OS2U Kingfisher has ranged far and wide and it was widely seen in action. The OS2U Kingfisher is a compact wing monoplane with a big central float and small establishing floats. The OS2U’s performance was reticent due to its light engine. The OS2U Kingfisher was the main shipboard observation aircraft of the United States Navy during World War II. A total of 1,519 of the aircraft were built. The OS2U served the USN as a battleship and cruiser as well as the US Coast Guard, the Royal Navy and the Soviet Navy.

The crew of OS2U Kingfisher lived differently from the Naval Aviators who were part of the full squadron. During the war, the Kingfisher’s most important role was to rescue downed aviators and was second only to the PBY Catalina job.

The Kingfisher had some very notable missions. On July 15, 1942 the OS2U Kingfisher helped sink the U-576. One OS2U shot down the Japanese Zero fighter. Another is the rescue operation of Eddie Rickenbacker. The OS2U was also used in the mission of Lt. JG Rollin M Batten Jr. who heroically trekked the shore guns of Guam Island to rescue two aviators.
