The X-33 Venture Star was a proposed design by Lockhead Martin for a single stage to orbit reusable launch system. The specific objectives of Venture Star were as follows:
- Demonstrate that a maximum of 50 personnel performing hands on vehicle operations, maintenance and refueling can successfully accomplish flight readiness for two flights.
- Demonstrate a reusable cryogenic tank system.
- Verify TPS durability, low maintenance and performance at low and high temperatures.
- Demonstrate guidance, navigation and control systems.
- Achieve hypersonic flight speeds.
- Demonstrate composite primary space vehicles.
- Demonstrate ability to perform 7-day turnarounds in three consecutive flights.
- Demonstrate capability to perform a 2 day turnaround between two consecutive flights.
The assumed date for the X-33 Venture Star to roll out was May 1999. The first flight was planned for July. The program for X-33 Venture Star was scheduled to be completed by the year 2000. The test program for the Venture Star would include a combined total of approximately 15 flights that began July 1999 and ended December 1999. The test flight plan included three short range, seven mid range and five long range test flights.
First landing of the X-33 Venture Star was at Silurian Dry Lake Bed near Baker, California. Three flights were scheduled for that. The Michael Army Field was the second landing area for the X-33. It was a part of the Utah Test and Training range, located at south of Salt Lake City. On December 31, 1996, the airfield of Malmstrom Air Force Base was closed for the final landing of the X-33. The airfield has a hard surface approximately 3,500m long and 61m wide with a 305m overrun at each end.
