The Spad S.XIII made its first appearance in 1918. From the Spad VII air frame it does have twin guns and a bigger Hispano-Suiza engine with a staying power of two hours. The Spad XIII was quick to go up. It became the preferred aircraft of some fighter aces like Guynermer, Charles Nungesser, Francesco Baracca, Eddie Rickenbacker and Rene Fonck. Guynermer had its last victory using the Spad XIII and this was the first score of the aircraft. There were 8472 of Spad XIII that were built in the war.
The first flight of the Spad XIII was in April 4, 1917, and the next month it was brought to the French Air Service. The Allied forces were fast to take on the new fighter, and closely half of the 893 bought for the United States army were still in service in 1920. It was also send to Japan and Poland. The Spad XII can only take the pilot. Its empty weight was 566 kg and a maximum take off weight of 845 kg. It has a maximum speed of 218 km per hour and a rate of climb of 384 feet per minute.
