During the Korean War, the US Air Force and the USN employed the T-6 Texan in battlefield surveillance where it received the designation Mosquito. It was also used as forward air control aircraft in Korea and, to a lesser extent, Vietnam. The RAF used the Harvard in Kenya against the Mau Mau Uprising insurgency in the 1950s. Though most famous as a trainer, the T-6 also won honors in World War II and in the early days of the Korean War.
A total of 15,495 T-6 Texans have been built, and the US retired the aircraft from active duty by the end of the 1950s. Several nations, including Brazil, China and Venezuela, utilized “the pilot maker” as their basic trainer well into the 1970s. Many other small countries used the aircraft in light attack or counter insurgency roles. Since World War II, the Texan has been a regular participant in air shows and was used in many movies such as Tora! Tora! Tora! and The Final Countdown. Today, it is still a popular warbird aircraft and over 350 planes remain in airworthy condition.
