The B-52 has been in active service with the USAF since 1955, first with the Strategic Air Command (SAC), and since 1991, with the Air Combat Command. The Stratofortress saw combat in the war in Southeast Asia while serving with the SAC. The B-52F was the first to arrive in Southeast Asia, followed by the B-52G in 1972. On December 18, 1972, President Nixon ordered the B-52G aircraft and the older B-52D to begin bombing military targets in the Hanoi and Haiphong areas of North Vietnam. The bombing operation, nicknamed Linebacker II, ended on December 29. Six B-52Gs were hit by enemy surface-to-air missiles over North Vietnam, with four going down around Hanoi and the other two crashing in Thailand. Another B-52G crashed presumably because of materiel failure. A total of 15 B-52s were shot down by surface-to-air missiles during the 11-day operation. On August 15, 1973, over 8 years of conventional bombing operations in Southeast Asia were terminated by the SAC, when all US bombing of targets in Cambodia ceased. The B-52G was also used extensively in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm before being phased out of operational service in 1994. On December 14, 1960, a B-52G aircraft completed a world record-breaking flight of 10,078.84 miles without refueling, lasting 19 hours and 44 minutes.

Despite proposals to replace the Stratofortress with other aircraft, its superior performance at high subsonic speeds and low operating costs, compared to other USAF strategic bombers, have kept it in service. In January 2005, the B-52 became the second aircraft, after the English Electric Canberra, to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary operator.
