History:
The P-51 Mustang was considered as the best fighter aircraft during the World War II. The excellent fighter was very competitive against all combatants and allied aircraft. The P-51 destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other fighter in Europe. P-51’s specialty was the ability to fly into the enemy’s territory and stay for a long time. It also could break off combat when needed which was a major feature. The Mustang was by far the most cost efficient combat aircraft built. Between 1941 and 1945, the US Army Air Force ordered 14,855 aircraft, over 8,000 of which were P-51Ds.
The P-51D became the most widely produced variant of the Mustang. The P-51D incorporated several improvements such as the new "bubble-top" canopy that greatly improved the pilot's vision, the new K-14 gun sight, an increase from four to six .50-cal machine guns, and a simplified ammunition feed system that considerably reduced gun jams. During the Korean War, the P-51D was used primarily for close support of ground forces until withdrawn from combat in1953.
