The Spitfire Mk. 1 Supermarine is an all-metal single-seater fighter plane that has several technical features of the earlier racing seaplane. Four hundred fifty Spitfire Mk. 1 initial editions were ordered in June 1936 with 1,030 hp Merlin II, two-blade fixed-pitch propeller and four 0.303 inch Browning guns with 300 rounds of ammunition. The Supermarine Spitfire Mk. 1 went into production in 1937 and started its operation in June, 1938. By October, 1939, the Air Ministry had ordered over 4,000 of these aeroplanes.
Spitfires were still in production after the warfare. By October 1947, 20,334 of them had been manufactured. The last operating flying of a Spitfire, the Spitfire PR-19, took spot on 1st April, 1954.
The Spitfires were in the forefront of the fighting and in every major action fought by the R.A.F. No combat fighter is more deserving of its legendary reputation than the one truly immortal warplane to survive World War 2.
