History:

The SPAD S.XIII was a French biplane fighter aircraft of World War I developed by SPAD from the successful earlier SPAD VII. The SPAD XIII was one of the most capable fighters of the war and one of the most produced with almost 8,500 aircrafts built.

The SPAD XIII was different from its predecessor by the number of aerodynamic and other refinements including larger wings and rudder, a more powerful Hispano-Suiza engine and a second Vickers machine gun for added firepower. These improvements led to greater increase in flight and combat performance than its main contemporaries the British Sopwith Camel and the German Fokker VII, and was renowned for its ruggedness and diving ability.

SPAD S-XIII was flown by famous French pilots Georges Guynemer, Rene Fonck, Italy’s Francesco Baracca and United States Army Air Service’s Eddie Rickenbacker. Other Allied forces were quick to adopt the new fighter and nearly 893 aircrafts were purchased by the United States Army Air Service and were still in service in 1920. After the war, it was exported to Japan, Poland, Czecholovakia.
