History:

The one in the picture is the mottled gray "Gustav", the Messerschmitt Me-109G flown by Erich Hartmann. Erich Hartmann is the greatest Ace that ever lived. He flew a total of 1,425 missions in 2 years and fought in more than 800 battles.

The BF 109 series was developed when the Daimler-Benz 605 became available. The early versions of the BF 109G looked the same as the BF109 F-4 with the same armaments. The Daimler-Benz 605 suffered dependability problems during its first year. It forced Luftwaffe units to lower its maximum power to 1,310 hp.

Adjustments were made to fix the problems. They placed a larger supercharger for the engine and a larger vertical stabilizer. The adjustments made were to increase the speed of the aircraft particularly to go against the Allies’ P-51D and Spitfires that were faster fighter aircrafts. With the BF109 having a high wing loading, they thought that the extra weight on the engines and heavier armaments affected its handling and control.

A couple of versions were presented for the special missions. At this time, high altitude interceptors and long range fighters can be stated. The former could carry two 300 of liter drop tanks each was under its wing. For the comfort of the pilots, they received pressurized cockpits and GM-1 nitrous oxide for high altitudes in the latter version. It also has the ability to increase the engine output by 300 hp and an above performance in high altitudes. The performance was greater in any of the allied fighter aircrafts in service from 1942 to 1943.
