In 1967 the Sikorsky HH-53 entered Vietnam for a mission; it quickly began flying with the 3rd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group. The Sikorsky HH-53 can carry heavy loads on a sling underneath. To protect itself the HH-53 helicopter had three 7.62 mini guns capable of firing 2,000 to 4,000 round a minute. The Sikorsky HH-53 is said to be the largest, fastest and most powerful heavy lift helicopter in the Air Force.
The Sikorsky HH-53 helicopter can pick up 20,000 pounds with its hoist. During the past space programs, the HH-53 was assigned on duty at the launch site as the primary astronaut recovery vehicle. On May 1980 eight Sikorsky HH-53 aircrafts found provisional home at the 20th Special Operations Squadron. It was only until 1987 that the squadron decided to replace the HH-53 with the MH-53.
