Manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft, the MH-53 is a reconfigured version of the CH-53E primarily used by the U.S Marine Corps. The MH-53E is considered as the Western world's largest and heaviest helicopter. Sailors commonly refer to the Super Stallion as the "Hurricane Maker" because of the downward thrust the helicopter generates. The MH-53E is used for Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM), with secondary missions of vertical shipboard delivery and assault support. The MH-53 can operate from carriers and other warships and is capable of towing a variety of mine hunting/sweeping countermeasures systems, including the Mk 105 magnetic minesweeping sled, the AQS-14A side-scan sonar, and the Mk 103 mechanical minesweeping system. Sea Dragon is capable of carrying up to 55 troops or a 16-ton payload 50 nautical miles or a 10-ton payload 500 nautical miles. When performing the assault support mission, the MH-53E can be fitted with the GAU-21 .50-cal. machine gun ramp-mounted weapon system.
The prototype, MH-53E, made its first flight on December 23 1981. It underwent evaluation and testing at the Naval Coastal Systems Center in Panama City, Florida. The MH-53E Helicopter is a CH-53E modified to perform AMCM missions. The modifications include enlarged sponsons, rear escape hatches, improved tail rotor system, airframe structural reinforcement, 30,000-pound tension tow boom, 90-degree stub ramp, winch control system, AN/APN-217(V)2 Doppler Radar, a second AN/APN-171(V) radar Altimeter, improved mirrors, equipment stowage box, Mk-104 davit hardpoints, egress lighting, guillotine, tension, and skew system, tow hook release system, transfer hook and control system, smoke marker rack and XM-218.50 caliber machine gun. The MH-53E Helicopter retained approximately 80 percent of the CH-53E configuration. A total of 115 MH-53E were built.
The scale model of the MH-53E is made from the finest quality of mahogany. Master craftsmen use only their hands and basic tools when crafting each piece. The replica undergoes sanding and priming several times before skilled artists apply their paintbrushes to replicate even the finest details with excellent accuracy. More than just a result of fine craftsmanship, it is a work of art. The MH-53E comes with a mahogany-based chrome pedestal and makes an exquisite display piece, perfect for collections or gifts.
